MORGANTOWN — Montana Johanssen scored twice and Maddie Fristch added two assists as the Hawks won the OVAC fifth-place consolation game at Mylan Pharmaceuticals Stadium Saturday morning.

Johannsen got UHS on the board early thanks to a long punt from goalie Emily Monti. The junior headed the ball over the Steubenville defense, broke in alone and slotted the ball past diving Big Red keeper Tessa Rusnak for the 1-0 lead.

The Hawks struck again midway through the half when Fritsch placed a lobbed ball into the path of Anna McBee, who one-timed a shot into the top corner to double the lead. Steubenville (4-8-0) pulled themselves back into the game early in the second half. Forward Bailee Beall powered her way through the middle of the Hawks’ defense and beat the onrushing Monti to cut the lead to one.

UHS answered quickly, however, as Johannsen was sent in alone by another lob, this time from Kenya Huckaby, and again beat Rusnak to restore the two-goal lead. The score gave UHS some life, and the Hawks added two more in quick succession.

An excellent angled through ball from Fristch allowed Avery Alexander to pass into an open net, and Carly Greathouse took a pass from Emerson Cunningham, weaved her way past a defender, and beat Rusnak with a shot to the right side, completing the scoring.

“Even though this isn’t a championship game, it’s still a privilege to participate in a playoff game,” UHS coach Graham Peace said via email. “I was really pleased with the way we stepped up, especially when Steubenville put some pressure on us. It was an excellent way to end our OVAC season and a good stepping stone for our program.”

Monti made five saves in the UHS net, while Rusnak finished with eleven for the Big Red. The Hawks (6-6-3) will play against on Tuesday when they travel to Parkersburg for a 6 p.m. game.
