Lonnie Layton Benson, 98, of Morgantown, passed away peacefully, Saturday, Sept. 30, 2023.
Lonnie was born in Morgantown on July 25, 1925, the son of the late Warden Benson and the late Burhl Engleheart Benson.
Lonnie enlisted in the United States Marine Corps on Sept. 28, 1943, and served in the South Pacific Campaign during World War II until Nov. 15, 1945. Upon his return he reenrolled in Morgantown High School, where he met his wife, Louise Dove. They were married for 64 years.
Lonnie and his identical twin brother Don were well known in Morgantown. Together they owned and operated Benson Brothers Painting for over 50 years. He was an avid fisherman, hunter and marksman and a long-standing member of the Mason-Dixon Riffle Club. Lonnie had 22 nieces and nephews.
He is survived by his two sons, Thomas Ward Benson, (Clarice Stalnaker) of Morgantown and Chris Benson of Boston, Mass., and his brother Terry Benson of Hagerstown, Md.
