Hilda Williams

Hilda Amanda (Criss) Williams, 95, of Tunnelton went home to be with her heavenly father, Sept. 29, 2023, from Janet’s Heavenly Home in Fellowsville.

She was born in Denver, Preston County, on June 17, 1928, the daughter of the late Earl R. Criss and Flossie L. (Wolfe) Criss. She was the last surviving member of her family that was blessed by siblings of five boys and nine girls.

Hilda was a long-time member of the Denver United Methodist Church, the Tunnelton Historical Society and was nominated Tunnelton’s History Hero sponsored by the Division of Culture and History. She loved to read, attend, listen and watch Mountaineer basketbal games.
Hilda graduated from Tunnelton High School in 1946 and then was employed at Westinghouse in Fairmont. After returning to Preston County, she married Foster “Foss” John Williams. She started another career as a cook at Tunnelton high school, then Central Preston Junior High, and lastly South Preston Middle School.
Hilda is survived by her only daughter: Deane “Dee” Shaffer and spouse Robert of Tunnelton and a brother-in-law JC Williams of Virginia. She was preceded in death by her husband, Foster J. Williams in 1986; in-laws Charles and Edith Williams, five brothers, eight sisters, and brothers and sisters-in-law.

Friends may call at the Kingwood Funeral Home, 295 S. Price St., on Monday, Oct. 2, from 5-7 p.m. and Tuesday, Oct. 3, 2023, at 10 a.m. until the time of the funeral service at 11 a.m. with Pastor Eddie Martin officiating. Interment will follow in the Shaw Cemetery, Denver.
