MORGANTOWN – The Morgantown and University High cross country teams traveled north Saturday morning for the AJ Everhart Uniontown XC invitational yesterday morning.
The Morgantown Mohigans took first place as a team in the girls varsity 5,000 meter race, and the University Hawks did the same on the boys side. Like the top overall spot, the MHS boys finished runner-up while the UHS girls finished second also.
Morgantown seniors Madeline Gump and Jennifer O’Palko finished first and second overall in the race. Gump ran a time of 19 minute flat, nearly 25 seconds of her teammate who finished at 19:70. Junior Maraid Johnson finished in sixth place overall with a time of 20:01.90.
UHS freshman Abigail Rogers finished fourth overall in the race with a time of 19:44.10 while her teammate junior Claire Von Boetticher took eighth overall on the day posting a time of 20:16.40.
On the boys side, the Hawks had a strong showing with half on the top ten finishers coming from UHS. Senior Jacob West, junior Tyler Umbright, and sophomore Ethan Conroy finished in the top three places in the race, in that order. West with a time of 16:17.40, almost 30 seconds ahead of his teammate in second place, Umbright, who finished with a time of 16:44.50. Juniors Jack Overfield and Gavin Whorton rounded out the top ten finishers for UHS.
The UHS boys finished with a low score of 19, 61 points ahead of second place. For the girls’ though, it was a different story, as they saw Morgantown dominate the field and finish with a score of 30, 29 points ahead of UHS in second place.
