Nancy Roder

Nancy Roder, 78, longtime resident of Cheat Lake, passed away Aug. 2, 2023, peacefully at home. Nancy was born in Charleston, to the late Denzil and Loretta Harper on Nov. 18, 1944.

Nancy is survived by her beloved husband of
59 years, Mike Roder; son, Michael Roder (Lisa) of Hollywood, Fla., and his daughters, Taylor and Madison; daughter, Missy Barnett (Barney) of Raleigh, N.C., and her daughter Emma of Aiken, S.C.; brother, Richard Harper (Marla) of Chesterfield, Ill.; uncle, Richard Dunlap (Judy) of Huntington; cousin, Elizabeth Brannum of Huntsville, Ala.; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Nancy was an alumnus of WVU, obtaining a Master’s in Public Health. She was a former educator at Mon General Hospital for many years; also working at NIOSH, Monongalia County Health Department, and private contractor for West Virginia data collection and analysis of West Virginia Medical data. She retired in 2004.

Nancy’s passion for expanding knowledge was evident in everything that she did in life to include, being an educator to pass on the same passion to others. Through the years, she has made lifelong friends working in various organizations as a volunteer.

She was a Paramedic volunteer with Monongalia EMS from when the county started EMS services.

As a lover of all creatures, Nancy wanted them to be loved and cared for also. She volunteered with animal organizations West Virginia Raptor Rehabilitation Center, in Fairmont, and the Great Pyrenees Rescue (where she adopted her fur child, Tilly). She was instrumental in co-founding the ReTails store by M-SNAP (Mountaineer Spay Neuter Assistance Program) in Morgantown.

Nancy loved gardening and became a certified Master Gardener through the Monongalia County Extension Service of WVU, volunteering for several years at the West Virginia State Fair in Lewisburg at the West Virginia exhibit. The Master Gardeners planted and maintained public gardens around and in
Morgantown.

Nancy was always willing to share her home with animals in need. Giving a flower or plants with smiles and advice from her garden with family and friends.

The family wishes to extend their gratitude to WV Caring Hospice and Home Instead for their support in her final days.

A memorial gathering will be held at Fred Jenkins Funeral Home from 2-4 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 26, followed by brief comments by Chaplain Ed Horvath.
