Joseph Dorton

The family of Joseph Calvin Dorton mourns the loss of a wonderful, caring, affirmative, and life guiding husband and father. Joseph, 82, passed away at his home in Morgantown, on Monday, Aug. 14, 2023.

His beloved wife, Karen, and children, Stacia and Christopher, respected and loved him so very much. Joseph was a kind and caring special person who spoke softly, and helped and guided so many others. He lost his life after being ill with Parkinson’s disease for many years.

Born Dec. 20, 1940, in Glen Jean, son of Volena VanStavern Dorton of Union, and Douglas Dorton of Russell County, Va., Joseph lived and grew up in Princeton. He made many friends and graduated from high school there. Joseph served in the U.S. Army in Frankfort, Germany, and spoke very positively of his rewarding experiences in the Army of international travel, and friends.

Joseph graduated from Concord University with a degree in chemistry. He began working for WVU Mining Extension in 1970 and retired there as a Full Professor. Joseph was part of a team to write the electrical certification and testing for underground mines. West Virginia University delegated him to six different states to provide instruction to coal miners, operators, and providers to meet standards of electrical certification, testing, and safety while working underground.

Joseph loved teaching engineering at WVU and so much of time with his family was spent reading, playing games, enjoying snacks, and telling jokes and stories of work. Joe’s life was full of love and joy. Joe will be missed very much, and forever loved.

Friends may join the family to honor Joe’s life and legacy at Smith Funeral and Cremation Care, 108 Holland Avenue, Westover/Morgantown, on Tuesday, Aug. 22, 2023, where viewing will take place from 12:30 p.m. until the time of the funeral service at 1:30 p.m. officiated by Rev. Zac Morton. Following the funeral service, he will be laid to rest at Nicholson Chapel Cemetery where Full Military Honors will be accorded at his graveside.
