MORGANTOWN – Mon Health Medical Center and Mon Health Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital both received a 4-Star Overall Hospital Quality Star Rating for 2023 from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS).
Hospitals are rated by CMS on a scale of one to five stars, with five being the highest and three being the most common.
“Mon Health Medical Center is extremely honored to be recognized as a four-star rated facility by CMS,” said Krystal Atkinson, chief administrative officer at Mon Health Medical Center, in this week’s announcement. “This recognition allows patients and families to understand that when they come to our facility, they are receiving care at a safe, patient-centered hospital.”

CMS bases the annual ratings on 46 hospital quality measures divided into five weighted quality categories: mortality (22%), safety (22%), readmission rates (22%), patient experience (22%), and timely and effective care (12%).
Mon Health Medical Center and Mon Health Stonewall Jackson received a 5-Star rating for patient recommendations. The recommended hospital star rating is based on patients’ responses to the question, “Would you recommend this hospital to your friends and family?”
CMS reviewed data from 4,654 hospitals: 483 (10.4%) received 5 stars; 803 (17.3%) received 4 stars; 872 (18.7%) received 3 stars; 668 (14.4%) received 2 stars; 250 (5.4%) received 1 star; and 1,578 had too few measures or measure groups reported to establish a rating.
Locally, WVU Hosptials received 3 stars for overall quality and 5 stars on the patient survey.
Three West Virginia hospitals received 5 stars for overall quality: Clarksburg VA Medical Center, Huntington VA Medical Center, and Grant Memorial Hospital in Petersburg.
