Thelma Cavanaugh

Thelma Jean Cavanaugh, age 86, peacefully passed away on Thursday, August 3, 2023, after courageously battling Alzheimer’s for eight years. She was the beloved daughter of the late Frank and Minnie Fisher. Thelma was preceded in death by her first-born son, Joseph Michael Cavanaugh Jr.

She is survived by her loving husband of 65 years, Joseph Cavanaugh; her son, Mike; daughters, Frances, and Jeanie (Tom) Hess; brother, Ralph; sisters, Betty, Mary (Junior), and Susan (Jim); grandchildren, Michael Cavanaugh, Ryan Rudolph, Erik Rudolph, Alexa Rudolph, Thomas Hess and Laura Cavanaugh; and great-grandson Ryder Weaver; and a special sister-in-law Kathleen Cavanaugh from Atlanta, Ga.
She was also preceded in death by her siblings, Frank Fisher, Philip Fisher, Raymond Fisher, Richard Fisher, Ruth Spring, and Renee Lucas.

Thelma was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, excelling as a homemaker and cherishing moments spent with her family. She shared her passion for WVU sports and Pittsburgh Steelers football games with her husband and children. Thelma’s culinary skills were second to none, and she delighted her family and loved ones with tremendous meals. Her baking talents were especially cherished, and the kids often lined up at her door for her delicious freshly baked cookies and cakes. She also had a heart for animals and provided a loving home for her cat Puffy and dog Stripey.

Thelma’s compassionate nature led her to work as a Home Health Aide, where she provided exceptional care and love to her elderly patients with long-term illnesses. During her two years at Sundale Nursing Home, she received the same level of devotion and care from Blue Bailey and Nicole Stoneking, who treated her like family. Thelma was also a devoted catholic and member of St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church.

At the discretion of the family, a private visitation and Mass will be held exclusively for the family and invited guests.
