Dorothy Rowan

Dorothy D. Rowan, a beloved mother, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully on June 28, 2023, in Morgantown, after a courageous battle with cancer. Born on March 31, 1938, in Scotts Run, to Steve and Anna Yanchus Duski, Dorothy was one of 11 children and was known for her faith-filled, generous, and caring nature.

Dorothy was a proud graduate of University High School, class of 1955. She was a hardworking woman who held various jobs throughout her life to help the family during the times her husband was on strike from the coal mines.

In 1968, Dorothy married the love of her life, Teddy C. Rowan, after they had both followed their own paths. Their marriage was a testament to their enduring love and commitment, lasting 32 years until Teddy’s passing. Dorothy was a devoted mother to her two daughters, Tonya M. Rowan of Morgantown and Tasha H. Rowan (Jason Johnson) of Brighton, Mich.

Dorothy’s faith was a cornerstone of her life. She was a dedicated member of St. John University Parish and previously attended St. Theresa. Her commitment to her faith was evident in her daily life and actions. She was an avid flower and vegetable gardener, often giving away much of her harvest to feed multiple families. Her generosity went beyond her garden, as she was known to be a grandmother to her extended family.

Dorothy is survived by her daughters; two sisters, Helen Skalecki of Morgantown and Anna Mae Martin of Richwood; and two brothers, Edward Duski of Mich., and William Garcher of S.C. She was preceded in death by her husband, Teddy C. Rowan, her parents, and six siblings.

Dorothy D. Rowan will be remembered for her unwavering faith, her strength, generosity, and her sense of humor. Her legacy will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.

Friends will gather at the St. John University Parish from 9 a.m. on Monday, July 3, until Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. with Rev. Fr. Phillip R. Szabo as celebrant. Dorothy will rest beside her husband at the East Oak Grove Cemetery following Mass.
