Kathryn Howard

Kathryn “Kytt” Coombs Howard, 69 of Morgantown, passed away, Tuesday, June 20, 2023, at J.W. Ruby Memorial Hospital.

Kathryn was born in Pittsburgh, Pa., on September 22, 1953, the daughter of the late James Elwood Coombs and La Rue (Shannon) Wilson.

Kathryn graduated from Morgantown High School and graduated with a degree from Fairmont State College. She also received a certification in horticulture due to her love of plants and flowers. Kathryn honorably served in the United States Air Force. Most of her life was spent residing in Florida where she was employed by Nova Southeastern University as a Financial Accountant before returning home to West Virginia to care for her late mother, La Rue. Kathryn loved the concept of family and deeply cherished her son, Maxwell Howard. She enjoyed hobbies such caring for her dog “Emmie” and cats, quilting, diamond painting, plants, and flowers. Her beautifully crafted creations were bestowed upon her many friends and family members.

Kathryn is survived by her brother, Scott L. Coombs; and two sisters Nora and Beth Sheets; nephew, James S. Coombs II, and wife Crystal; sister-in-law, Gilda R. Coombs; maternal mother, Clara Carmichael, and family.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her grandparents, Arthur and Naomi Shannon; her loving son, Maxwell “Max” Howard; brother, James S. Coombs; brother, Douglas J. Coombs; brother, Sean C. Coombs; and Cookie Coombs.

The family thanks Anne Coombs, Mike and Marge Kostak, Danny Burton, Jo Powers, Rebecca “Becky” Tennant and Janna and Craig McClung and their two children Ariona and Aleah, to whom she absolutely adored, for their extraordinary care and kindness during a time of need. The family also thanks all friends and family members for their support, love, and friendship.

In keeping with her wishes, cremation arrangements have been provided by Hastings Funeral Home, Omega Crematory. There will be a graveside service with full Military honors held at East Oak Grove Cemetery at 11 a.m. Saturday July 1.
