A section of Monongahela Boulevard between the Star City Bridge (Boyers Avenue) and the Patteson Drive intersection by the WVU Coliseum had to be closed for over an hour Tuesday afternoon due to a gas leak in the area, causing delays in the area for drivers.
Hope Gas External Affairs Manager Christine Mitchell said the leak was the result of a third-party contractor who accidentally hit an eight-inch gas line while working on the site for the Steak ‘n Shake restaurant being built at 3510 Monongahela Boulevard.
With the assistance of local police and fire departments, the road was closed in both directions for over an hour while crews worked to locate the damaged section of pipe.
Hope Gas crews were able to isolate the broken pipe and shut off the gas to that area. The road was reopened shortly after 1 p.m.
Mitchell said the leak did not cause any service disruptions to Hope Gas customers in the area.
