MORGANTOWN — Kerr Kriisa is back with the WVU men’s basketball team again.
The senior point guard from Tartu, Estonia put his name in the transfer portal last Friday, but withdrew it on Sunday, after it was announced that Josh Eilert was taking over as head coach on a one-season interim basis.
“The support and love that the Mountaineer fan base has showed me in (two) months is unmatched,” Kriisa tweeted Sunday. “I feel so lucky to call Morgantown home.”
Kriisa came to Morgantown in April after transferring from Arizona, where he played for three seasons.
Kriisa averaged 9.9 points last season, while shooting 36.6% from 3-point range for the Wildcats.
He’s led the Pac-12 in assists the last two seasons, the first player to accomplish that feat in more than 20 years.
Along with Kriisa, Joe Toussaint and Tre Mitchell also entered their names into the portal. Mitchell made a visit to Kentucky on Saturday, while Toussaint has visits set up with both Kansas State and Texas Tech.
It’s possible both players could also return to WVU after weighing their options.
The three players elected to enter the portal after the resignation of Bob Huggins on June 17. Huggins was arrested and charged with driving under the influence (DUI) of alcohol in Pittsburgh on June 16.
“It’s been a crazy and busy week,” Kriisa told ESPN. “I’m deeply sorry about the situation, as I was really looking forward to playing for coach Huggins. Huggs will always be my guy. I’ve only known him for a few months now, but he is the most genuine man I have ever met. He is the man.”
Eilert’s hiring came with the thought from WVU officials he would be able to stabilize the roster. He’s spent the last 16 years at WVU in different roles and was elevated to assistant coach last season.
Sources have told The Dominion Post the WVU players had always favored WVU hiring someone who was already on staff.
With Kriisa back in the fold, the Mountaineers are at 11 scholarship players for next season. The NCAA limit is 13.
