It’s not a birthday without a party.
And since West Virginia’s 160th birthday falls on a Tuesday this year, Morgantown is celebrating a little early with a big party downtown, and everyone is invited.
From a press release about the event, which runs from noon to 5 p.m. today:
“Enjoy local and regional bands like PopShop, Megan Jeans and the Cooley Gang with your family for free. Browse beer, wine and food vendors stationed on High Street.
Attendees can commemorate the experience by purchasing beer in a special edition commemorative cup, with two beer fills. All tickets and cups for beer can be purchased on the official West Virginia Birthday Party website, https://gcevents.ticketspice.com/wv-birthday-party-2023.
“Festivities will also include a West Virginia birthday ceremony, where attendees can witness a symbolic cake-cutting, along with words from Wren Baker, WVU athletic director, at 3 p.m. Funds raised during the West Virginia Birthday Party will support Main Street Morgantown, the Morgantown History Museum and M.T. Pockets theater company.”
We love seeing our downtown come to life. Not so long ago, main streets and downtowns were a dying breed, although Morgantown’s has always managed to survive. But it seems like the last few years, it’s really thriving. There are arts and entertainment, a variety of restaurants and local shops to explore. There are beautiful murals adorning the buildings and cozy outdoor patios. And it seems like there’s something good happening all the time.
We very much appreciate the work Main Street Morgantown, the city and local businesses and stakeholders have put into the myriad events happening on and around High Street — from the farmers markets to the Arts Walks to the pop-up events and parties like the one today.
We hope you make it downtown to celebrate West Virginia’s birthday today. After all, it’s not a birthday without a party, and it’s not a party without people. Go enjoy some good music, good food, good cake and good company. We’ll see you there!
