M.T. Pockets Theatre Company will present “Carry Me Back to West Virginia,” a stranger-than-ficton true story written by Lawrence DuKore, this weekend and next.
The play is based on actual events that happened in Mingo County in the 1970s involving a coal mine, a bridge, and the Soviet Union.
Showtimes are 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday and June 23-24, and 2 p.m. Sunday and June 25 at M.T. Pockets Theatre, located in the Woodburn Activity Center, 203 Parsons Street, Morgantown. Tickets are $17.50 in advance or $20 at the door.

According to M.T. Pockets, “the small, unincorporated town of Indian River is in turmoil after losing the bridge connecting the town to the local mines. Joseph Birdwell (performed by Justin Grow) comes home after 20 years and pits the Soviet Union and state government against each other to get a new bridge built.”
The play shows the real-life drama that builds as members of the town “navigate owning local businesses, friendships, love, and bettering the community they know and love.”
Describing what makes the show relatable — and relevant — director Thomas Lyall writes in his program notes, “In this space you will not see these titans go toe to toe, instead, we show you what the dreams and desires of small people can do.”
