Now comes the (early) celebrating.
With the last day of school arriving next week for summer break, Monongalia County’s Board of Education took the time during its last meeting of the 2022-23 academic year Tuesday to recognize its own.
Plaques and certificates were presented to the county’s Golden Horseshoe winners, along with two National Merit Scholars and one U.S. Presidential Scholar.
Mon’s Teacher of the Year and Service Person of the Year for 2024 were also recognized.
The Golden Horseshoe is the premiere award for knowledge of Mountain State history, geography and other milestones, as demonstrated by West Virginia’s middle school students.
Mon County’s Golden Horseshoe honorees: Maxwell Abildso, Tyler Kelly and William Tapia, all of South Middle School; and Shelby Basden, Lucille Dahle, Lorelei Namsupak and Pranav Sure, who all attend Suncrest Middle.
Morgantown High School is now boasting two more National Merit Scholars, with the inductions of Carter Herron and Amy Lu into its 2023 class.
Herron and Lu were among 12 students from the Mountain State, plus 2,500 from across the nation, named to the elite academic honorary.
A Morgantown High School senior who founded a literacy program for underserved youngsters across West Virginia and the globe was recognized by the BOE for her introduction into the 2023 class of U.S. Presidential Scholars.
Rania Zuri joined 160 other soon-to-named graduates from all 50 states and Department of Defense Schools abroad recognized for the prowess in the classroom and their altruism in the community.
Veteran math teacher Melissa Farley of University High School, Mon’s Teacher of the Year for 2024, was acknowledged by the board for that achievement.
The district’s Service Person of the Year was also recognized during the meeting for her 22 years of service to the district.
Nora Pacifico is a special-needs driver who also trains new hires to the Transportation Department.
In other matters, the $156 million operating budget for the coming school was made official, after a brief public hearing.
The board had voted in the affirmative for the document earlier this month.
