Morgantown senior Max Phillips-Hartley earned all-tournament recognition playing in last week’s WVSSAC state tennis tournament in Charleston.
All-tournament distinction replaces all-state accolades from previous years.
In the tournament, Phillips-Hartley advances to the quarterfinals in the singles and doubles brackets and helped the Mohigans advance to the semifinals in the team competition.
“All-state last year and all-tournament Award this year for Max, no player deserves it more,” MHS coach Sam Hall said via email. “Graduating Max this year is a big loss for our team. We’re losing our fierce captain and friendly leader and we’re really going to miss him.”
In singles, Phillips-Hartley advances to the quarterfinal round, but fell 8-2 to eventual champion AJ Mercer from Huntington.
In doubles, Phillips-Hartley paired with teammate Bennett Hall and made it to the quarterfinals.
In team competition, Phillips-Hartley’s 9-7 win in top-flight singles clinched a 4-3 win for the Mohigans over Woodrow Wilson. MHS would later fall to Hurricane 4-0 in the semifinal round.
