Mathis announces transfer to Houston; will reunite with Holgorsen

MORGANTOWN — A former WVU running back will reunite with the coach he originally committed to as Tony Mathis announced Monday that he is transferring to the University of Houston.

Mathis, a WVU running back from 2019-22, entered the transfer portal earlier this month and announced on social media Monday that Houston will be his landing spot.

At Houston, Mathis is reunited with former WVU head coach Dana Holgorsen. Mathis originally signed to play under Holgorsen at WVU as a member of the 2019 recruiting class.

Mathis signed his NLI to WVU in December of 2018 and Holgorsen left to take the head coaching job at Houston a month later in January 2019. Mathis stayed committed to WVU and joined the Mountaineers under new head coach Neal Brown.

Mathis played in 31 games during his time in Morgantown, including 11 starts. He rushed for 943 total yards and six touchdowns. Last season was his most productive, rushing for 562 yards and five touchdowns in 10 games.

Mathis figured to be a prominent piece of WVU’s running back rotation in 2023 prior to his transfer.

Houston is one of four schools joining the Big 12 conference this year, alongside Cincinnati, BYU and Central Florida. The Mountaineers and Cougars will play each other for the first time as conference foes on Oct. 12 in Houston, Texas.
