BLACKSVILLE — Mackenzie Wilson became the third member of the Clay-Battelle volleyball team to move on to the next level on Wednesday when she signed to continue her athletic career at Waynesburg University.
Wilson joined teammates Isabel Lapoe and Caitlynn Patterson in signing to play in college. In fact, Wilson and Patterson will continue to be teammates as the pair are heading to Waynesburg together.
“I’m excited, I’ve been playing volleyball with her since seventh grade,” Wilson said of Patterson. “I’m proud of her, I’m proud of how far her hitting has come along and how much she’s improved as a whole. I’m excited for the next four years with her.”
Wilson said it was one final trip up to Waynesburg to watch an open practice that helped her settle on her decision to become a Yellow Jacket.
In addition to being the third volleyball player to sign with a college, Wilson is the sixth C-B senior to sign this year overall, quite the number for a single-A school.
In addition to Wilson, Patterson and Lapoe (Mid-Atlantic Christian), there has also been baseball’s Kohlton St. Clair (Salem) and football’s Mason Chisler (Waynesburg) and Carson Shriver (Waynesburg).
“It shows that anything is possible and if you try hard and work hard, you will get acknowledged,” Wilson said. “That’s what happened for me and for Caitlynn and for the boys going to play football. We got our names out there.”
Wilson helped the Cee-Bees to back-to-back section titles the past two seasons, defeating South Harrison to do so in the fall.
