Thelma Pill

Thelma Degler Pill, 94, of Martinsburg, passed away Saturday, April 29, 2023, at her residence.

Born February 10, 1929, in Morgantown, she was the daughter of the late Fred Degler and wife Mary Degler and Stella Keener and husband Howard Keener.

She graduated from Key West High School in 1947 and was married on August 21, 1948, to Richard Dale “Dick” Pill. She resided in Morgantown and worked for the Monongalia County Board of Education as a secretary for over 20 years. In her retirement she moved to Bedington in 1986. She and her husband traveled extensively in their retirement, spending many winters in Myrtle Beach, S.C. She enjoyed working and managing the family farm, gardening, boating, watching WVU sports, and spending time with her family.

Thelma was an active member in her churches, teaching Sunday School for over 60 years at both Spruce Street and Bedington United Methodist Churches. Her faith in God guided her life which she passed along to her family and others.

She is survived by her sons, Richard “Rick” Pill, and wife Donna; Dave Pill; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; Shannon Gallo and husband Paul, (Serena and Vincenzo); Christine Fisher and husband James (James and Reed); Jessica Gingold and husband Ian (Aria and Sloane), Ashley Pill and Katie Pill. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years; her sister Louise Degler Crutchfield, many sisters-in-law; and brothers-in-law. She remained in close contact with her only remaining sister-in-law, Patty Vecchio.

Family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. on Thursday, May 4, at the Brown Funeral Home.

Funeral service will be held at Hastings Funeral Home, Morgantown, at 10 a.m., Saturday, May 6, with the Reverends Scott Summers and Walter Bowers officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Bedington United Methodist Church, 580 Bedington Rd., Martinsburg, WV 25404 or City Hospital Foundation, 2000 Foundation Way, Martinsburg, WV 25401.

Interment will be in East Oak Grove Cemetery, Morgantown.
