Cox, McCormick receive NFL rookie camp invites

MORGANTOWN — WVU only had one player selected in the NFL Draft, Dante Stills, and two sign as an undrafted free agent, Bryce Ford-Wheaton and Sam James, but at least two more former Mountaineers will get a shot at the pros.

Former WVU defensive backs Jasir Cox and Wesley McCormick have both received invitations to NFL rookie mini camps, with McCormick being invited by the Washington Commanders and Cox by the Philadelphia Eagles. Both spent just one season with the Mountaineers after transferring in prior to the 2022 season.

Cox, a native of Kansas City, Mo., joined the Mountaineers after playing four seasons at FCS power North Dakota State.

Cox played WVU’s hybrid spear position and amassed 62 total tackles, 34 solo, with six tackles for loss, half of a sack, three pass deflections and two fumble recoveries. He also scored a defensive touchdown against Baylor after recovering a fumble and returning it 65 yards to the endzone.

“I think Jasir Cox really helped himself last year,” WVU head coach Neal Brown said at the team’s pro day in March. “He’s a guy that can play all four special teams.”

McCormick came to Morgantown after five seasons at James Madison.

He finished 2022 with 17 total tackles, 14 solo, and two pass deflections as one of the Mountaineers’ starting cornerbacks.
