John Dorsey

John Dorsey, 84, passed away in Tallahassee, Fla., on April 15, 2023, after a short illness.
He was born in St. Louis, a son of the late Dr. Carl K. Dorsey and Jeannette R. Dorsey on Dec. 20, 1938.

His family later relocated to Morgantown, where he attended Morgantown High School and WVU, earning a bachelor’s degree. He then attended U.S. Navy Officers Candidate School and served in the Navy on active duty for three years and the Naval Reserves for several years, completing his service as a Lieutenant.

He subsequently moved to Fort Lauderdale, Fla., where he became a certified general real estate appraiser and real estate broker. He ran his company, J.Dorsey Real Estate & Appraisal Inc., for over 35 years. During his time in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., he was involved with numerous civic and charitable activities, having served as chairman of the Fort Lauderdale Planning and Zoning Board for numerous years.

John was known for his love of baseball, being a lifelong fan of the St. Louis Cardinals and his devotion to the U.S. Navy and his family.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Mary Elizabeth Eason, and stepson, Bartow Rainey. His only daughter, Mary Jeannette Dorsey, predeceased him in 2003. In addition, he is survived by four brothers and sisters, Alys Yoder (Bill), of Boonton, N.J., Dan Dorsey (Ruth), of Southport, N.C., Jean Karlson, (Doug), of New York City, and David Dorsey (Sherry), of Morgantown. His fifth sibling, Ann Sherin, passed the day after her brother in Southport, N.C.

A graveside ceremony, where he will receive full military honors, will be held at the Tallahassee National Cemetery, at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, April 25, where he will be interred. Following the ceremony, a celebration of his life will be held at Culley’s MeadowWood Funeral Home at 700 Timberlane Road, Tallahassee, Fla. at 3 p.m. All friends and family are invited to attend.
