MORGANTOWN — West Virginia will return its second-leading scorer next season, as forward Tre Mitchell announced through social media Wednesday he was returning to the school for his final season of eligibility.
The 6-foot-9 Pittsburgh native averaged 11.7 points and led the Mountaineers with 5.5 rebounds per game.
“Mountaineer Nation, Let’s Run It Back,” was the message Mitchell left at the end of his video announcing his return.
With Mitchell’s return, the bulk of WVU’s roster appears to be intact.
In recent weeks, guards Jose Perez and Joe Toussaint announced they, too, were returning.
The only players who announced their intentions to transfer were seldom-used Jamel King and Josiah Davis, although the window for transfers is open until May 11.
WVU has already brought in guards Omar Silverio (Hofstra, Manhattan) and Kerr Kriisa (Arizona) as transfers who will be eligible to play next season.
Kriisa, a native of Tartu, Estonia, averaged 5.1 assists per game last season at Arizona and shot 37% from 3-point range.
WVU head coach Bob Huggins is also bringing in former Iowa State guard Caleb Grill and Syracuse forward Jesse Edwards for visits as two more potential transfer candidates for next season.
As for Mitchell, the forward gave the Mountaineers an inside-outside mix last season after transferring in from Texas.
He recorded two double-doubles in Big 12 play, but was also WVU’s second-best 3-point shooter.
Mitchell began his career at UMass, where he was the Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year in 2020.
In four seasons — two at UMass, one at Texas and one at WVU — Mitchell has scored 1,398 points and grabbed 597 rebounds.
