MHS boys undefeated through seven games, down Linsly 15-3

MORGANTOWN – The Morgantown boys lacrosse team defeated Linsly on Thursday evening at Pony Lewis field to improve to 7-0 on the season.

After falling behind 2-1 in the second quarter, the Mohigans responded well to lead 5-2 at halftime. MHS junior attacker Wyatt Kozel scored six goals on the night, with senior Weston White scoring five of his own.

“We were a little flat to start out and didn’t execute early,” MHS head coach Jeremy Bennett said after the game. “We talked about how we were better than how we were playing at that moment.”

After a low-scoring opening quarter ended tied 1-1, the visitors wasted no time finding the back of the net in the second, scoring just 40 seconds into the quarter to take a 2-1 lead.

MHS called a timeout and regrouped as Bennett mentioned, and were able to continue playing confident offense until they were rewarded.

With 9:53 to play in the second quarter, MHS tied the game at two by way of junior Nate Kupec, who slotted home after a well-worked team play.

The next five minutes saw no goals but a fast pace-of-play as teams traded possession of the ball. Finally, Kozel fired home the go-ahead goal with just over four minutes to play until halftime.

“Wyatt made a nice play there for that goal,” Bennett said. “And Ty (Edgerton) was looking for assists tonight and played really well also.”

The home team would score twice more before the midway point to secure a 5-2 lead at half, one they wouldn’t surrender.

The Cadets opened the third quarter the same way they did the second, with a goal just as play began. The lead was cut to two at 5-3 just 24 seconds into the second half, but that would be the final goal for the visitors.

Morgantown lead 7-3 after third quarter, and add eight more goals (four by Kozel and three by White) in the final twelve minutes of the game. MHS downed Linsly 15-3.

The Mohigans have enjoyed almost every win by double digits this season and know they are one of the stronger teams in the state this year. Despite the hefty margins of victory, coach Bennett knows it’s important to keep his team focused.

“Our message is to just keep getting better every day,” Bennett said. “These other teams are only going to get better and every game is going to be harder than the last. Individual development and playing as a team are what we probably need to focus on the most going forward to keep winning games.”
