Judith “Judy” Michele Moore, 79, passed away peacefully on Saturday evening, Feb. 25, 2023, at her residence in Evergreen Assisted Living.
Judy was born on Jan. 5, 1944, in Elyria, Ohio, the daughter of the late Nathaniel Graham Townsend and Sarah Elizabeth (Davidson) Townsend. She grew up in Morgantown, attended Suncrest Junior High School and graduated from Morgantown High School (’62), where she was a member of the marching/concert bands and a majorette. She was a loving wife, an extraordinary mother and grandmother and a compassionate and supportive friend. She was happiest and at her very best when she was with family and friends — vacationing at the beach, rooting for her Mountaineers, hosting her annual Halloween costume party and sharing in a laugh brought on by a good joke or funny story.
Judy worked in a variety of jobs to support her family before starting a career in the Department of Corrections at Kennedy Center Correctional Facility in Morgantown in 1977 — where she met her husband of 20 years, John S. Moore. After work-related relocations to Puerto Rico and Washington, D.C., Judy’s love for Morgantown and for West Virginia ultimately brought her back home in 1998, where she lived until her passing. She was very involved in Suncrest United Methodist Church, leading the effort to provide meals to those in need during the Thanksgiving holidays. Judy also traveled with the church ministry to restore homes after weather related disasters and served on the church board of directors for a short period of time.
Judy is survived by her sisters, Natalie Evans, of Los Angeles, and Patty DeProspero, of Scottsdale, Ariz.; her stepbrother, O.B. Fawley Jr., of Morgantown; her two sons, John Walker, (Lisa), of Houston, and Bob Walker, (Pam), of Morgantown; her two stepsons, Greg Moore (Dawn), of Morgantown, and David Moore, of Lexington, Ky.; and five beautiful granddaughters.
In addition to her parents, Judy is preceded in death by her husband, John Moore.
Hastings Funeral Home has been entrusted with cremation arrangements. A memorial visitation will be held at Hastings Funeral Home, 153 Spruce St., Morgantown from 2:30-4 p.m. on Saturday, May 6, 2023.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made on Judy’s behalf in support of the Suncrest United Methodist Church Thanksgiving baskets program, 479 Van Voorhis Road, Morgantown, WV 26505.
