CHARLESTON — The Morgantown girls’ basketball team will take to the court Thursday morning in the first of two Class AAAA state semifinals at the WVSSAC basketball tournament in Charleston.
MHS advanced to the final four with a dominant 58-21 win over Princeton on Tuesday afternoon. The Mohigans will meet the Spring Valley Timberwolves, who enter the game with a record of 21-4, and only have one loss to an in-state opponent this season (Cabell Midland).
SV defeated Woodrow Wilson in the quarterfinals by a score of 59-47 on Tuesday with an efficient shooting effort of 20 for 44, including five triples.
The Timberwolves are an experienced group who have size, but not a lot of depth. In Tuesday’s win over Woodrow Wilson, SV only saw seven minutes of action from their bench players.
MHS head coach Doug Goodwin says getting to the rim is something that would help that, and with junior center Lily Jordan down low, he shouldn’t have too hard of a time figuring out where to go.
“With their lack of depth, we would love to get them into foul trouble,” Goodwin said Wednesday. “Getting to the rim would certainly do that, but we need to be patient as well on the defensive side; Understanding when to pressure and when to contain.”
Spring Valley enjoyed well-rounded scoring out of its starters in the opening victory with three different players reaching double figures and the other two had 14 combined.
“If you turn your head wrong, you’ll get beat against this team — you can’t take a play off in this game,” Goodwin said. “I feel our girls understand their defensive assignments — we just need to execute.”
The Mohigans and Timberwolves will fight for a spot in Saturday’s Class AAAA state championship game this morning at 11:15 a.m. at the Charleston Coliseum and Convention Center.
