Your Community Foundation of North Central West Virginia Inc. (YCF) is accepting scholarship applications for the 2023-24 academic year.
YCF oversees more than 40 scholarship funds primarily to benefit students in north-central West Virginia. Some scholarships are designated for graduating seniors of specified schools or those who live in particular counties. Others are awarded for specific fields of study such as music, veterinary medicine, or engineering. While the majority of YCF scholarships are for high school seniors, some are available for those in college.
These new scholarships are available for the first time in 2023:
- Angie and Abir Majumdar Scholarship provides two ($1,000 each) awards for West Virginia residents who have spent time in foster care or as a ward of the state. Must demonstrate financial need and have a minimum 3.0 GPA.
- Dr. William E. Phillips Jr. Leadership Marion Scholarship provides an approximate $500 scholarship to a graduating senior of a Marion County high school. Recipients must be enrolled in a private or public vocational training program, apprenticeship, technical, two-year, or four-year institution in West Virginia. Must demonstrate participation in leadership development and community services organizations and activities.
- Timbuck Shields Legion Scholarship is a one-time award for 2023. It will make two awards (approximately $1,300 each) for graduating high school seniors from Harrison County or Taylor County. Must have participated in high school athletics and have a minimum 2.5 GPA.
- James A. Womeldorff Vocational Development Scholarship provides an approximate $1,500 award to a West Virginia resident with a documented disability who displays financial need and is seeking post-secondary education at a trade, vocational, two-year or traditional four-year college or university.
Prospective applicants may review all YCF scholarship descriptions and requirements at ycfwv.org/scholarships/.
Students can complete a universal online application that matches them with eligible scholarship opportunities. Each scholarship opportunity requires an essay and at least one letter of recommendation. Many opportunities will require demonstration of financial need. Applications are due Tuesday and recipients will be announced in May.
“YCF appreciates the opportunity to connect deserving, local students with scholarship awards made possible by many generous donors,” said YCF President Patty Showers Ryan.
