Steven Liston

Steven “Flip” Robert Liston, 66, of Kingwood, passed away Feb. 16, 2023, in Morgantown, in the presence of his loving family. He was born May 8, 1956, the youngest of three sons of the late James “Jim” and Patricia “Pat” (Conley) Liston, of Tunnelton.

Steven was proud to be a West Virginia coal miner. After graduating from Tunnelton High School in 1974, he worked underground in a variety of roles, including miner operator, scoop operator, buggy operator, bolter operator, electrician, shotfirer, maintenance foreman and underground mine foreman. He was employed with Viking Coal and Patriot Mining for over 20 years until injuries from a rock fall prevented him from returning underground.

Steven was a lifelong member of the Kingwood Fraternal Order of Eagles. He enjoyed the outdoors, driving his truck out West, feeding the deer, and spending time by a good campfire. He always liked to listen to the police scanner and ask his kids what they planned to do with their share of the money if he had the winning lottery ticket that week.

What Steve will likely be remembered for the most is his personality, summed up in one word: ornery. He was an eternal jokester who would always tease and give those around him a hard time. He loved having friends and the camaraderie of making them laugh. Steven also loved being a father. With his children by his side, his final words were: “Love you.”

Steven will be forever missed and remembered by: daughter and future son-in-law, Casey Liston and Jason Likens, of Morgantown; daughter and son-in-law, Sheena and Bobby Peddicord, of Kingwood; son, Phillip Conley, of Kingwood; daughter-in-law, Katie Ryan-Conley, of Bruceton Mills; four grandchildren, Zaden Peddicord, Layla Peddicord, Alexander Conley and Paxton Conley; and brother, Joseph Liston, of Tunnelton. The family would also like to recognize and thank dear friend, Kelly Tasker, of Reedsville.
In addition to his parents, Steven was preceded in death by a brother, Jim Liston.

To honor his wishes, Steven will be cremated. Family and friends may be received at a celebration of Steve’s life, to be held at The Appalachian Hotel in Kingwood, from 6-8:30 p.m. on Friday, March 31, 2023.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Kingwood Funeral Home at P.O. Box 1000 Kingwood WV 26537-1000 or directly on the tribute website at www.kingwoodfuneralhomewv.com. The submission of any stories, memories, photos, or videos of Steve would also be greatly appreciated and treasured by his family.
