Sandra Cassella

Sandra K. “Sandy” Cassella, 69, of Little River, S.C. (formally of Morgantown), passed away Feb. 20, 2023, and entered into the arms of our Lord, and is rejoicing with her son and parents. Sandy suffered several long-term illnesses and passed away in Charleston Area Medical Center, Memorial Division, in Charleston. She was Methodist by faith.

Sandy was the daughter of the late Daniel and Maxine (Johnson) Spiroff, of Morgantown. She spent most of her life in Morgantown, moving to the North Myrtle Beach, S.C. area with her husband, Joe, after their retirement in 2010. Sandy loved life, she loved people and she loved her family dearly. She was kind and giving and touched many lives throughout her years. Everyone that knew her loved her. She grew up in the 60s and 70s, graduating from Morgantown High School in 1972. She was a flower child that was raised practically on the main campus of WVU, and she watched and lived the protests of the Vietnam War. She loved the excitement of Sunnyside, especially following a game win. She married Joe, the love of her life, in 1974, and enjoyed her life and family to the utmost. Sandy and Joe raised their two sons at Paradise Lake in Morgantown. She loved the life of raising her young family on the lake with other family members, especially her bestie and cousin, Paula Walters, and many other friends. She loved that life for her family, and she and Joe worked hard to live it.

After relocating to North Myrtle Beach, S.C., she loved the beach life and spent every day on the beach with her friends until she couldn’t go any longer. Sandy created many friendships that she cherished there in the last years of her life, and she hated to leave. She drug her feet in the sand as long as she could all the way back home to West Virginia when she became ill. She checked the Myrtle Beach, S.C. weather every day this past year while living in Charleston. She was a beach girl.

Sandy was employed by Mylan Pharmaceuticals in Morgantown for 20 years, working in quality control, retiring in 2010. In her earlier years, she and Joe operated a mini mart in Granville, and she worked for Walters News Stand in Morgantown back in the early days when Jason was young.

Left behind to cherish her many memories are the love of her life for 49 years, Joseph Anthony Cassella “Joe”; her beloved son, Dan Cassella, of Charleston, and her cherished grandson, Joey Cassella, of Carmichaels, Pa. In addition, she is survived by her best friend, her sister, Joyce Spiroff; her niece, Taylor Edwards, of Charleston; two precious great-nieces, Kylee Edwards and Kianna Woodruff, of Charleston; two aunts, Connie Gennoy, of Fairmont, and Carol Spiroff, of Fort Ashby; and many cousins, extended family and wonderful friends.

Sandy is preceded in death by her parents and her precious son, Jason Cassella, in 2019. Jason was her first-born son and she loved him on earth like no other and is now dancing with him in Heaven.

Gatens-Harding Funeral Home in Poca is in charge of arrangements. A service to celebrate Sandy’s life will be held at the funeral home at 2 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 27. A dinner of celebration will be held following the service in the Community Building at the Cross Lanes Fire Department. A graveside service will be held in early April at Beverly Hills Cemetery in Morgantown, to lay both Sandy and her son, Jason, to rest together. Further arrangements will be provided in the near future.
