When it comes to celebrating Valentine’s Day, few things are as iconic as flowers.
To honor the special status nature’s blooms hold for the holiday, Monongalia Arts Center offered an opportunity on Monday to learn an even more time-honored tradition — the art of ikebana, or Japanese flower arranging.
Instructor Motoko Hattori shared the methods and ideals behind the ancient art form, which combines blooms with branches, stems and leaves to express feeling and movement.
Begun during the Heian era, the practice uses elements of line, color and mass, according to ikebana.com.
Celebrating another type of movement, MAC will host a tango class at 7:30 p.m. today. Cost is $10 per couple.
Aldona Bird, programming coordinator for MAC, said staff have more classes and events in the works, which will be announced soon.
“We are also looking for creatives to utilize the space,” she added. “Art instructors, musicians and other performers are welcome to reach out to us if they are interested in holding classes, performances or gatherings.”
