John E. Shahan Sr, 101, of Tunnelton, passed away peacefully at his home on Saturday, Jan. 28, 2023.
John was born July 24, 1921, and was a son of the late Orville B. and Florence Shahan. He served as an Engineer in the Army during World War II and was stationed in Japan and the Philippines for three years. He worked as a coal miner for 20 years in various coal mines. After retiring from mining, he went on to take over the family grocery store business and continued to run Shahan’s Grocery Store with his late wife, Naomi, and their children for 23 years.
John is survived by one son, Danny Shahan, of Tunnelton; one daughter, Judy Judy, of Polk City, Fla.; one daughter-in-law, Crystal Shahan, of Salem; two grandchildren, Jason Baylor and Brian Shahan; five great-grandchildren: Tyler Baylor, Shalyn Baylor, Sarah Baylor, Brian Shahan and Olivia Williamson; two great-great-grandchildren, Raven and Willow Williamson; several nieces and nephews; and two former sons-in-law, Fred Judy, and Richard Baylor, whom he was very fond of.
In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 72 years, Naomi Shahan, in June of 2021; one son, John E. Shahan Jr.; and one brother, Howard Shahan.
Friends and family will be received at Kingwood Funeral Home, 295 South Price St., from 4-8 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 1 and from 10-11 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 2. Funeral services will be held at Kingwood Funeral Home Chapel, at 11 a.m. on Feb. 2 with Pastor David Biggins officiating. Full military honors will be accorded by the honor details of VFWs and Vietnam Veterans of Preston County, and the WVANG. Interment will follow at Mt. View Cemetery in Tunnelton.
