Kathryn Pyles

B. Kathryn (Mitter) Pyles, 91, of Newburg, passed away on Friday, Jan. 20, 2023, at her son’s home with family by her side. She was born July 22, 1931, in Newburg, (Chestnut Ridge Community), daughter of the late Ross “Brownie” Mitter and Florence Agnes (Smith) Mitter.

She graduated from Newburg High School, Class of 1949, where Ralph and Kathryn were high school sweethearts. Kathryn was a member of the Chestnut Ridge United Methodist Church and was a very active member, where she taught Sunday school for 35+ years, taught Bible school and was very dedicated to her Heavenly Father. Kathryn loved baking and made many couples their wedding cakes, enjoyed embroidering, crocheting, quilting and doing jigsaw puzzles.

She is survived by her son, Ralph F. Pyles Jr. and wife Janey, of Newburg; her daughter, Beverly A. (Pyles) Hedge and husband, Lee, of Mount Morris, Pa.; five grandchildren, Marsha L. Stewart and husband, Steve, of Independence, Ralph F. Pyles III and wife Carol, of Morgantown, Jeffrey L. Pyles and wife Shelly, of Kingwood, Mitchell Fortney and wife, Brittainy, of Newburg, and Justin J. Fortney and companion, of Pam, of Swanton, Md.; eight great-grandchildren, Ryan J. Pyles and companion, Virginia, Jeremy A. Pyles and fiancée, Dixie, Corey R. Pyles and girlfriend, Taylor, Brooke N. Pyles, Adam Fortney, Kynley Fortney, Briar Fortney and Ethan Stewart; one great-great-granddaughter, Aubrey Shipp; two sisters, Frances Marie Stephens and Mary Margaret Lyons and husband Robert; one brother, Lyle E. Bailey; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph Francis Pyles Sr. in 2008; one sister, Vivian Virginia Travis and husband Clyde; one brother-in-law, Paul Stephens Jr.; and one nephew, John Lyons.

Family and friends will be received at Bolyard Funeral Home, 79 Morgantown Ave., Newburg, from 3-7 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 24, and from 10 a.m. until the time of service at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 25, with Chaplin Dennis Lusin NVC officiating. Interment will follow at the Shay’s Chapel Cemetery. Bolyard Funeral Home is honored to serve the Pyles family.
