MORGANTOWN — Here is a sampling of bills introduced on Friday, Jan. 20. Local sponsors and co-sponsors, if any, are noted.

  • HB 2847, to impose a life sentence on fentanyl dealers; Delegate Geno Chiarelli, R-Monongalia, lead sponsor.
  • HB 2849, to change the date of local school board elections from the date of the primary election to the date of the general election.
  • HB 2851, to legalize the personal use and possession of cannabis by adults; providing for a county option election to allow for the production and sales in that county; Delegate Evan Hansen, D-Monongalia, sponsor.
  • HB 2852, the Orphan Well Prevention Act, to prevent oil and gas wells from being orphaned on surface owner’s land with no responsible driller or operator with the resources to plug the well; Hansen, sponsor.
  • HB 2853, to increase the penalties for passing a school bus and causing injury.
  • HB 2885, the “Life at Conception Act, to implement equal protection for the right to life of each born and preborn human person; Chiarelli, co-sponsor.
  • HB 2890, to modify the authority of teachers and other school personnel for discipline of students that requires removal of a student from the classroom; and requiring each county school board to implement a tier-system policy, with teacher input, to provide a framework for student behaviors and punishments.
  • HB 2895, to authorize the commissioner of Corrections and Rehabilitation to grant cost of living stipends to correctional officers throughout the state, intended to offset increases in the cost of living where determined necessary by the commissioner; governor’s bill.
  • SB 304, to increase the criminal penalty for fentanyl.
  • SB 305, to clarify that a licensed racetrack casino need not maintain an active dog racing license in order to receive telecasts and accept wagers on dog and horse races, or to otherwise apply and qualify for a video lottery or racetrack table game licenses.
