Dorothy Carline

Dorothy “Dibby” E. Carline, 93, of Morgantown, passed from the loving arms of her husband to the loving arms of her heavenly father on Thursday, Jan. 5, 2023, at her home.

She was born June 15, 1929, in Davenport Center, N.Y., a daughter of the late George Ralph Searles and Dorothy (Boyes) Every. She is survived by her husband of 73 years, Dr. John L. Carline.

Dibby married her high school sweetheart in 1949. As a devoted wife and mother, she supported John’s teaching, coaching, refereeing, schooling and 40+ years of military service. In 1968, John finished his doctorate at Syracuse University. Moving to Morgantown with their six children, to teach at WVU, where they remained happily married to this day. John’s “precious angel with the big blue eyes” always said, “I have had the most wonderful life! I have been so blessed and have no regrets. I wish all my family could have what I have.”

She was a member of the Morgantown Service League, secretary of the original Lakeview Public Theater and a long-standing member of Cheat Lake Community Church. She was an accomplished seamstress and enjoyed counted cross stitch and knitting. She enjoyed baking and decorating cakes for many years. Her home, with the backyard pool, was her “castle.”

In addition to her husband, she is survived by her children, Joann “Joie” Hughes, Gina Pellettere (Bruce Johnson), Jacqueline “Jackie” Dial (David), Tonya Gilmore (Charles), John P. Carline (Allison) and Joseph “Tony” Carline (Dawn Albright); sister, Margaret LaMonica; 19 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. Each new addition to the family brought Dibby immeasurable joy.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her sister, Jean Townsend and her son-in-law, Eddie Hughes.

In keeping with her wishes, there will be no public services. Cremation arrangements have been entrusted to Hastings Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Cheat Lake Community Church, 527 Tyrone Road, Morgantown, WV 26508.
