MORGANTOWN – Morgantown, University, and Clay-Battelle have earned a berth in the upcoming state football playoffs beginning Friday.
No. 14 Morgantown will travel to No. 3 Martinsburg. The Bulldogs are the defending state champions and have captured five of the last six state championships. This season, the Bulldogs are 8-2 with their losses being against teams outside of West Virginia. The Mohigans will need to play their best game of the season in order to advance to the second round. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. in Martinsburg.
UHS earned the 13th seed, pitting the Hawks against the high-powered attack of No. 4 Hurricane.
“We have an extremely tough matchup,” University High head coach John Kelley said Sunday. “They have an amazing mix of athletes in Mondrell Dean and Jeremiah Riffle. Both are Division I athletes. Big, strong, refusing to go down and run through tackles. The play very aggressive and solid defense also. We know we are in for a very difficult game but our kids have played solid football since week 4 and we plan to be ready for the challenge.”
In Class A, the Cee-Bees made the playoff field as the 15th seed. They were ranked No. 17 entering the final week of the regular season, but a 54-8 victory against Hundred on Friday moved C-B up two spots in the final rankings.
They will travel to Parkersburg High to face off against the second-ranked Williamstown Yellow Jackets, who come in with a record of 8-1 in the regular season. That game will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday. Williamstown was the runner-up in Class A last season.
