George A. Cavender “Fred” also known as “Cheech,” broke on through to the other side on Sept. 18, 2022. He was a beloved father, grandfather, brother, brother-in-law and friend to many.
Fred was born in El Paso, Texas, the son of James H. Cavender and Maria E. Oronoz-Cavender. After leaving El Paso, his family lived in San Diego, Calif., Durham, N.C., and Cincinnati before coming to Morgantown when he was a teenager and making Morgantown his permanent home. He graduated from Morgantown High School in 1976 and worked for Mountaineer Contracting for 30-plus years.
He is survived by his son, Erik M. Cavender and his wife Alexa M. Panico-Cavender; daughter, Adriane J. Cavender; his grand-sons, Nathen Douglas and Trenten James; the mother of his children, Joyce L. Cavender-Hartley; his brother, James “Jr.” H. Cavender; and sister, Lora H. Cavender-Reh.
His biggest joys in life were spending time with his grandsons, rooting for the Steelers and Mountaineers, collecting novelty items and, of course, spreading love through his enthusiasm for plants.
Upon his wishes, Fred’s ashes will be spread through out areas of West Virginia, Texas, and Mexico, while Jimi Hendrix plays in the background.
An informal celebration of life party will be held upstairs at Sabraton Station at 5 p.m. on Nov. 4. All friends and family are welcome.
