Eddie Harris

Mrs. Eddie P. Harris, 89, of Morgantown, passed away peacefully early Monday morning, Oct. 17, 2022, at the home of her daughter, Crystal, in Morgantown.

Eddie was born on Nov. 4, 1932, in Attapulgus, Ga., a daughter of the late Arcastus Guyton Harston and Clifford Guyton and stepfather John Harston.

She lived a full happy life, and spending time with family was a major part of her life. She is survived by her son, Glenn Harris, and her daughter, Crystal Harris. Her surviving grandchildren are Carisa Jeffries, Booker Todd Walton III and Kristin Schneider. Eddie had the joy of playing with her great-grandchildren, Claire and Tristan Walton, Emily and Ellis Schneider and Brooklyn and Brielle Jeffries. She is also survived by a host of nieces, nephews and great-nieces and -nephews.

Eddie was the sole survivor of her immediate family. She was preceded in transition by her sisters, Clifford Mae Winston, Lula Alice McCullough and Johnnie Mae Holloway, and her brothers, Willie Guyton and Jonathan Guyton.

Eddie was a faithful servant of Christ. She was a member of St. Stephens Baptist Church and would sometimes attend services in a church in Fairmont as well. When she could no longer attend services in person, she would listen to her favorite pastors and spiritual music on television. Eddie loved to travel and experience new places; for a while, she lived and worked for the USPS in White Plains, N.Y. Upon her return to Morgantown, she held several jobs, eventually retiring from WVU as a secretary.

Even though Eddie has gained her heavenly wings, her family can take joy in knowing she is resting in a place of warmth and comfort.

“And when great souls die, after a period peace blooms, slowly and always irregularly. Spaces fill with a kind of soothing electric vibration. Our senses restored, never to be the same, whisper to us. They existed. They existed. We can be, Be and be better. For they existed.”
— Maya Angelou

Family and friends may join to honor Eddie’s life and legacy at Smith Funeral & Cremation Care, 108 Holland Ave., Westover/Morgantown, from 6-8 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 21 and again from 9 a.m. until the time of her homegoing service at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 22 officiated by the Rev. Wesley Q. Dobbs. Following the service, Eddie will be laid to rest at East Oak Grove Cemetery.

The family has requested that face masks be mandatory for anyone in attendance at the visitation or funeral services.
