Picks of the patch: The best the region has to offer this fall

The month of October brings a variety of events and activities to celebrate the spooky season with numerous opportunities for artists. Check out the following opportunities that are available to help advance and support creative endeavors.

Moonlight Market

Sept. 24 was the first official Moonlight Market held in the downtown Morgantown Marketplace. The event had an amazing turnout, providing the public with a variety of creative vendors to explore, delicious baked goods, DIY craft events and local refreshments. The Moonlight Market has plans to continue providing creative public events in the upcoming months and will be cycling different artists/vendors through the events. Projected dates for future events include Nov. 26 for Small Business Saturday and the Dec. 17 Winter Celebration Market. Interest forms are now being accepted from homemade artists to vend at the projected upcoming events and more in 2023. The form is located in the bio of @wvmoonlightmarket on Instagram.

Mineral Museum Exhibit

Monday is the final chance to submit work for the WV Watts Mineral Museum Exhibit. The WV Watts Museum is having an open call for artists in their upcoming exhibition “Mineral Matters.” This exhibition will feature artwork on mineral resources by interpreting them in personal, practical, ecological, ancestral, or conceptual ways. Artist feature

Located at 716 Venture Drive is the amazing full-service nontraditional jewelry studio/store called Spencer & Keuhn. Spencer & Kuehn features the creative artisanal work of Katherine Spencer and John P. Kuehn. The two artists combine their talents to fabricate fine jewelry using ancient techniques combined with 21st-century technology.

Spencer earned her BFA in jewelry design and metalsmithing with the highest honors from the Rochester Institute of Technology in 2004. Upon graduation, she began creating her own pieces of fine jewelry, selling them online and at craft fairs. She came to Morgantown in 2013 where she began working locally as a jewelry designer and bench goldsmith.

Kuehn attended the University of Tennessee and graduated with a Ph.D. in Resource Economics. He went on to teach economics at West Virginia University for 15 years. His talents and research include much more than economics, as he took courses to become a gemologist from the Gemological Institute of America.

Spencer & Kuehn is much more than a common fine-jewelry store — the location features the work of three local artists and allows for Spencer and Kuehn to perform and share their goldsmithing talents. Spencer & Kuehn is looking to expand to carry more local jewelry artists. If interested, please reach out to katherin@spencerandkuehn.com.
