Roy Clarkson

Dr. Roy Burdette Clarkson, 95, of Westover, passed away on Monday, Sept. 12, 2022, at his home surrounded by his family. Roy was born in Cass, on Oct. 25, 1926, a son of the late Walter and Mertie Curry Clarkson.

Roy proudly served his country in the U.S. Army. After his honorable discharge, Roy worked as a public school teacher at Suncrest Jr. High and later became a professor of biology and botany at West Virginia University for 36 years. During his time working, he authored two books and had multiple publications. On retirement, he received the distinction of professor emeritus. He was a member of the Morgantown Lions Club and Riverside Lodge #126 in Cass, WV. In his free time, Roy enjoyed woodworking, gardening and a good game of chess.

Roy is survived by his daughters, Karen Sue Gibson (Dave), of Westover, and Kimeran Ann Harron (Raymond), of Roanoke, Va.; and grandchildren, Kathleen June McElroy, Raymond Anthony Harron, Samuel Joseph Harron (Melissa), Alexander James Harron (Licie) and Benjamin Thomas Harron.
In addition to his parents, Roy was preceded in death by his wife, Georgia June Hardwick Clarkson; son, George Roy Clarkson; and his 10 siblings.

A private graveside service was held at Beverly Hills Cemetery, with military honors conferred by Westover VFW #9916 and WV Military Honors, Camp Dawson. McCulla Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
