Leaf-peeping in Mountaineer Country doesn’t peak until mid-October, but the next few weeks are sure to bring hints of orange and yellow as the leaves begin to change. Immerse yourself in all the fall colors of Mountaineer Country as you attend football games, go on hikes, or take part in the wild and wonderfall events being held. Although we’re not in the throes of autumn just yet, the smell of pumpkin spice is in the air, and our fall bucket list is jam-packed with must-see annual events.

Mark your calendars for these upcoming events

  • FOC documentary debut at The Metropolitan Theater, 6 p.m. Sept. 22.

Join Friends of the Cheat and partners at the historic Metropolitan Theater for a free public screening of “The Friends of the Cheat Story.” This new documentary will be screened as a double feature following an earlier FOC documentary, “Catalyst of Change.” Shown together, the two films portray the successful restoration of the Cheat River, previously one of the most endangered watersheds in the nation. This event is free, the doors open at 5:30 p.m. and the film begins at 6 p.m. with a Q&A session following.

  • Dog Day of Summer 2022, 1-6 p.m. Sept. 25.

Bring your four-legged friends to the last day of the 2022 summer splash pad season as you attend Mylan Parks Annual Dog Days of Summer. All dogs and handlers get into the outdoor splash pad for free, so come take advantage of the nice weather as your pups swim around. This event is being held with Blue Mountain K9 and while they love all dogs, only ones that get along with other dogs and children are permitted. Dogs must also be always kept on a leash.

  • Summer Sunday Yoga, 9-10 a.m. Sept. 25.

Head to the West Virginia Botanic Garden for an all-level vinyasa flow class that incorporates the inspirations of nature. This hour-long course will teach you breathing techniques that help to relax and build heat within your body, as well as yoga postures to strengthen and lengthen your muscles. Come enjoy a guided relaxation to help calm the weekly stress. This class is $12 for members and
$15 for non-members.

  • Balloons Over Morgantown, Sept. 29-Oct. 2, check event schedule for launch times.

One of Morgantown’s favorite events is back! Balloons Over Morgantown is a hot air balloon event where 12-18 balloons take flight over the beautiful hills of Mountaineer Country. The event consists of five launches from the Morgantown Airport over the course of the weekend, weather permitting. As balloons fly, they will be visible from different areas of Morgantown, but if you’re able to make it to the launch you can join in on the chase while you follow their location on Facebook or Twitter.
