John “Junior” Calvin Martin, 95, of Fairchance Road, Morgantown, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Wednesday, Sept. 7, 2022. He passed peacefully at the Mon Health Medical Center.
Junior was Methodist by faith and a lifelong member of the Calvary United Methodist Church. He was a faithful Christian and never missed church unless his health wouldn’t permit.
Junior enjoyed singing with his wife, Ann, and loved to play music. He played with Bob White and the Country Boys and The Country Ramblers, just to name a couple. He was also well known at the Sagebrush Round-up. He played guitar, mostly the steel guitar, that he learned in 1934 when his mother bought his first one. In 2005 Junior was inducted as a charter member of the Golden Circle Country Music Honor Society.
Junior worked for Frazee Lumber and WVU’s Athletic Department, where he worked in maintenance from 1964 until his retirement in 1989.
He is survived by his stepmother, Virginia Shultz; sister-in-law, Annabelle Martin; nieces, Michelle Hershman, Melissa Smoody, Melanie Crowe and Marcia Legler; nephew, Joseph Kurilko; and a special cousin and caregiver of the last several years, Ms. Kathryn “Kitty” Larew. Also, surviving are his great-nephews, Chad and Brandon Hershman.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Anna Louise Lewis Martin; one daughter, Sharlene Louise Martin; his mother, Elizabeth Nabors Martin; father, John Shultz; and brother, James Lloyd Martin.
Visitation will be held at the Calvary United Methodist Church, Fairchance Road, from 5-8 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 9, and again from 10 a.m. until time of services at 11 a.m. on Saturday. He will be laid to rest beside his wife and daughter at the Zion Cemetery, Sunset Beach Road. Services have been entrusted to the Fred Jenkins Funeral Home.
