University volleyball earns multiple wins in home-opening quad matches over Buckhannon, East Fairmont

MORGANTOWN — Despite beginning the season a little later than some teams, the UHS volleyball team and head coach Nick Lusk have shot out of the gate quickly and have tallied multiple wins, including two on Wednesday night.

The Hawks hosted Buckhannon-Upshur High School and East Fairmont, with the teams playing round robin style until everyone played two matches.

First up for UHS were the Lady Bucs, who had just finished a very tight game against EFHS in the Gold gym.

Opening the game in the first set, the Lady Bucs and the Hawks seemed to be playing at an even level through the first few points, as the game was tied 3-3. That wouldn’t last long as UHS would give away three straight points and trail 6-3.

A few points in the Hawks favor swung momentum back to their offense, and an extended rally that went their way helped get UHS over the hump in the first set.

Up by just one at 13-12, the Hawks were on serve and looking to extend the lead. Five straight points for UHS then forced a timeout by BU, with the lead being the largest on the set at 5, 17-12.

UHS didn’t let the timeout hurt them though, and exploded for the next four points, making the lead eight at 21-13. the first set would finish 25-15 and the Hawks would lead 1-0 in a best of three match.

Coach Lusk praised his young team’s effort to stay aggressive after going down early in the opening set.

“We got a little complacent, played a warm up game against our JV then had to wait so you know,” he said. “But we really rebounded and carried the momentum into the second set and finished really strong so you couldn’t ask for more in the situation.”

The Hawks would dominate the next set by a score of 25-7, and it wasn’t close from the beginning.

Lusk says his young players are getting better by the day and he knows they have plenty of positives to build on to go along with a decently-high ceiling.

“We are young, but I like how we are showing we aren’t one-dimensional,” Lusk said. “We have several hitters and we are hard to defend. We have eight sophomores and they have been playing enough together that I think we should be in good shape going forward.”

The results of both matches were as follows for UHS:

UHS (2) v BUHS (0)

25-15, 25-7

UHS (2) v EFHS (0)

25-11, 25-9
