MORGANTOWN — The wait is over, and the result isn’t surprising to many.
WVU head coach Neal Brown on Monday named JT Daniels the starting quarterback for Thursday’s Backyard Brawl renewal with Pitt at Acrisure Stadium in Pittsburgh.
Daniels, hoping for one more chance to be a Power Five quarterback, joined the Mountaineers in May after spring practice. During fall camp, he beat out Garrett Greene, Goose Crowder and Nicco Marchiol.
“JT earned the right to start,” Brown said. “I have a lot of confidence in him and the way he’ll perform in the opener.
“This isn’t something that’s new for him, he’s played in big games and I don’t think the atmosphere is going to rattle him.”
Daniels transferred from Georgia where he spent two seasons, but prior to joining the Bulldogs, he spent two seasons at USC.
Through four seasons, Daniels has amassed 4,840 yards passing and 32 touchdowns in 21 games.
This is his second go-around with offensive coordinator Graham Harrell after the two were together at USC in 2019.
“He has improved and I think it’s just because he’s more and more comfortable with what we’re doing,” Harrell said. “He’s just been more consistent lately.”
