MORGANTOWN – After making the Class A state playoffs for the first time ever a season ago, the Trinity football took the field on the hill in Sabraton to begin their season at home against Hundred.
Senior quarterback and safety Kyle Knight threw for over 150 yards and multiple scores, rushed for 50 yards and took an interception back the entire length of the field on defense.
The story of the evening turned out to be bad weather, as lightning cause multiple delays, one in each quarter in the first half.
The Hornets started with the ball first but failed to get a first down on the opening drive as the TCS defense opened its season strongly.
The Warriors offense, led by preseason all-state selection Levi Teets in the backfield, then took the field. Knight failed to complete his first two passes, but then completed a 46 yard bomb to freshman Marcos Kniska. Teets scored on the next play from the 5-yard line and opened the scoring 7-0
Lightning then delayed the game for about 45 minutes. After resuming in the first, the Warriors made it 14-0 on a pick-6 from Knight he returned for 100 yards to make it 14-0.
The second half began with the Warriors receiving the ball to start. The next drive would see another score for TCS when Knight found Josh Jorge across the middle for a 60-yard touchdown.
Two more touchdowns came from Knight on a 26-yard throw to Teets, followed by a 48 yard run by the Warriors QB to make the game 33-0 after a missed extra point.
The Hornest would get on the board in the game after taking the ensuing kickoff back for a touchdown to make the score 33-8 after a successful two-point conversion but then 39-8 after another Trinity touchdown by Teets from Knight.
Hundred scored again to cut the deficit to 39-16 but the Warriors proved to be too much and took home a win to open the season.
“Our effort overall was good, we are smaller team so four quarters can be tough,” TCS head coach Christopher Simpson said. “Make no mistake though, Hundred has a good team and an excellent freshman class. You can tell that the new coaching staff have been doing their job and the players are doing theirs, also.
“Our senior mean so much to our team. Levi and Kyle mean the world to this team with the amount of heart and athleticism they bring to the field.”
Trinity will travel to Ohio next week to face off against the Bulldogs of Bridgeport High, with kickoff set for 7 p.m.
