Morgantown boys soccer fall to Woodrow Wilson 1-0 in back and forth battle

MORGANTOWN — The MHS boys soccer team (1-1) lost its first game of the 2022 season on Saturday afternoon to the visiting Flying Eagles of Woodrow Wilson 1-0.

Senior Jack Grimmett slotted home a go-ahead goal late in the first half to give Woodrow a lead it wouldn’t surrender.

The game opened scoreless through the first 15 minutes of play. Both teams were able to have some decent possession on offense, but the defenses were equal to the challenge midway through the first half.

With 15 minutes left to play until halftime, WWHS found its first decent chance on goal. The ball bounced through the box after being crossed from a corner kick and settled for a shot at the top of the box that was saved by MHS goalkeeper Tyler Crites.

Not even five minutes later, the Flying Eagles would get the breakthrough goal. Senior forward Jack Grimmett made a dangerous run behind the MHS defense and was played a perfect through ball from the left wing. He settled with a dribble and finished over the right shoulder of Crites to make it 1-0. The score would remain the same going into the half.

Coming out of the halftime break, each team applied pressure seeking a goal to change the momentum of the game. MHS looking to tie the game and give itself a chance to win, and WHHS aiming to extend its lead and ensure a victory on the road over the defending class AAA state champions.

That goal was almost achieved 10 minutes into the second half when a header almost fell into the back of the net off of a Flying Eagle cross from the right wing, but the score would remain at 1-0 with the Mohigans becoming desperate for at least a game-tying goal.

Crites once again kept his team in it with a remarkable save off of the post with under 10 minutes remaining in the game. The MHS junior recorded six total saves on the night, but his team would eventually fall to the visitors 1-0.

Morgantown fall to 1-1 on the season and will return home on Tuesday to host Grafton High School with kickoff set for 6:00 p.m.
