MORGANTOWN — Three different Mohigans scored multiple goals on the way to a one-sided game on Wednesday night at Pony Lewis Field. Gracie Brown, Lillie Staples, and Ariana Borneo all earned a brace (two goals) in a rout of Buckhannon-Upshur, 7-0 ,to begin the year.
Despite the final result, the opening 25 minutes of the game saw each team held scoreless. MHS dominated possession, as BUHS was unable to hold onto the ball for more than a 10 to 15 seconds on offense.
The Mohigans finally broke through with just six minutes to in the first half, capitalizing off a corner kick. The ball traveled through a crowd of players before falling to Lilly Staples who buried a shot into the back of the net to make it 1-0, which would be the score at half.
The second half would be a very different story.
The Mohigans would net six total goals in the 40-minute second half. The first (second of the game) coming just six minutes in, followed by the third of the game for MHS when Ariana Borneo scored a very nice move that set up a shot from her left foot that hit the back of the net.
Gracie Brown scored the first of her two goals with 25 minutes left to play to make the lead 4-0 to MHS. Three more goals, one by each of the three multi-goal scorers (Borneo, Brown, and Staples) gave the Mohigans a victory by the final score of 7-0, in a game that was dominated by MHS.
“Judging from how we played, we know we can play much better,” MHS head coach Stirlin Rivers said after the game. “We had some mistakes today and luckily we didn’t get punished for it. If we want to play a certain style we will need to get better. A win is a win at the end of the day, we scored goals but we know we are supposed to do better. It’s a good start for the first game.”
Morgantown will wait a little while before seeing the pitch again, as they will host Bridgeport on August 25th at 6:00 p.m.
