MORGANTOWN – Taking the pitch in an official game for the first time since winning a state championship, the MHS boys soccer team began its title defense Wednesday night by defeating Buckhannon-Upshur 1-0 at Pony Lewis Field.
Unlike the girls game in the matchup of the two schools, the goals were few and far between. In fact, it took nearly the entire first half of the game for either team to score.
With only five second left on the clock, MHS forward Riley Brabson netted his (and his teams) first goal of the season, giving the Mohigans a 1-0 lead going into halftime with the near-buzzer beating finish.
The score honestly reflected the play of the first half, as both teams traded possession back and forth. Chances were created throughout the half with both goalkeepers making some crucial saves.
The second half would play out much like the first. 30 minutes past of back-and-forth soccer but neither team was able to find the back of the net. Just like in the first half, both teams keepers were making some crucial saves to keep the score where it was for their teams, respectively.
The clock would continue to wind and MHS would eventually take the season-opening victory over Buckhannon-Upshur 1-0.
The Mohigans will return home for their next game on Saturday to host Woodrow Wilson with kickoff at 2:00 p.m.
