At least three people died Thursday night in a plane crash in Marion County.
Names of the victims were not released.
The Marion County Sheriff’s Department released information Friday morning.
A call went out at about 7 p.m. Thursday that a plane went down in the Metz area, according to the sheriff’s release.
Mannington VFD and several Monongalia County VFDs began searching the area. At 7:50 p.m., searchers found a detached wing in the Campbells run area. The second wing and fuselage were found about 30 mintues later.
They were on a steep incline in a heavily wooded area. The fuselage was occupied by the pilot and two passengers. There were no survivors, the release states.
Sheriff’s deputies secured the scene and now will be in a secondary role to the FAA as an investigation is conducted.
The Federal Aviation Administration confirmed to MetroNews that a single-engine Piper PA-32 aircraft crashed in a wooded area near Campbells Run Road in Metz.
The plane is owned by Skyhawk Associates of Myerstown, Pa.
The plane was flying from Shawnee Field Airport in Bloomfield, Ind. to Deck Airport in Myerstown.
The agency and the National Transportation Safety Board will investigate the crash; the NTSB will lead the inquiry and provide further updates.
