Very little is free and that now includes daily parking at the WVU Coliseum.
West Virginia University recently told students, faculty and staff that beginning Aug. 17 they could no longer park at the Coliseum for free.
Many park there, walk to the Engineering PRT and ride to classes on another campus, or walk to buildings on the Evansdale Campus.
WVU classes begin Aug. 17, following Welcome Week, which begins Thursday.
Parking at the coliseum will be $1, plus a 25-cent fee, payable via a mobile app.
That was explained in the following notification sent out by the university.
“To support ongoing maintenance and improvement activities for the parking area, WVU Parking Management will begin charging $1 to park in the Coliseum parking lot, effective Wednesday, Aug. 17.
“The $1 rate is good for the duration drivers remain parked in the same spot each day within the Coliseum lot. However, drivers will be responsible for paying an additional $1 each time they leave and return to park in the Coliseum lot within the same day.
“Parking fees will be used to pay for a portion of the recent paving of the lot, as well as enhanced lighting in the area that was installed in 2021. The money also will be used for continued maintenance of the lot to ensure a quality parking experience for students, faculty, staff and campus visitors.
“To pay for parking in the Coliseum lot, drivers must use the ParkMobile app, which charges a 25-cent fee for each transaction (in addition to the $1 rate). Pay stations will not be available in the Coliseum lot.
“Drivers should download the ParkMobile app from the App Store or Google Play and enter their space number in the Coliseum lot to complete payment.”
The university said payment will be required from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday through Friday and there will be enforcement officers patrolling the lot.
The coliseum parking lot will continue to be used for WVU Athletics game day parking and during those times, the lot may be closed or parking may be limited.
A limited number of student parking permits and employee parking permits are available for purchase in the Parking Portal.
WVU also offers a variety of free transportation options for students, faculty and staff, including the PRT and Mountain Line buses.
