Get ready to hit the trail for Morgantown High

Strawberry feet, forever.

Now’s the time to start thinking about lacing up your running shoes and recalibrating the stopwatch setting on your phone.

That’s because the Mohigan Strawberry 5K is lapping back around next month.

The footrace and walk annually races money for academic programs at Morgantown High School, through the school’s MHS Foundation. It’s a tie-in with the foundation’s yearly strawberry sale, a signature fundraiser.

Participants will hit their marks Aug. 13 on the Caperton Trail at the Wharf District.

Start and finish is at the back of the Morgantown Marriott at Waterfront Place.

“We had more than 70 runners last year and we’re hoping for better than that this year,” said Earl Straight, a retired Morgantown High teacher who currently serves as the foundation’s president.

“We get a lot of support from the community,” he said, “and we appreciate that.”

Last year’s event was a COVID sprint, of sorts, Straight said.

That was after the pandemic forced the cancellation of the 2020 edition of the run and walk.

People were ready hit the trail for the school on Wilson Avenue, he said.

Morgantown High’s roster of alumni includes university presidents, stars of Hollywood and Broadway, medical researchers and ranking officers in the military.

The foundation is known for the scholarships it establishes for its students, including one of its more-recent ones in honor of Mary Petropoulus, the late teacher whose classes in psychology and European history were legend at the school, even if she wasn’t shy about ladling on the homework.

Grads who go forth with marquee success aren’t shy about acknowledging their high school alma mater, Straight said.

The immediate acknowledgement for now, though, the foundation president said, comes in the form of feet — not feats.

If you haven’t already, you can visit “MohiganStrawberry5K” page on Facebook for particulars on how to register, along with the rundown on sponsors.

Don’t forget the T-shirt, Straight said.

If you register by July 31, you’ll receive one while supplies last, he said.
