MORGANTOWN – Morgantown starting pitcher Tyler Furbee earned the win, giving up only four earned runs while throwing a complete game through six innings. Post 2’s offense provided the support, as they took the win in the opening round of the Area 2 tournament 14-4 over Clarksburg Post 13 after six innings.
A two-out rally in the top of the first inning gave Clarksburg the early advantage with a pair of quick runs. Two singles scored both runs and the score was 2-0 in favor of Post 13 without Morgantown seeing the plate offensively.
But if we have learned anything from Post 2 this season when it comes to batting, it almost always has one big inning offensively per game. That inning came in the bottom of the first on Tuesday night.
Post 2 would fire back with a two-out rally of its own when second baseman Jett Walters came to the plate with the bases loaded and drove in a pair of runs on a hard hit ball to left field. He would steal second on the next pitch and Post 2 would be rewarded. First baseman Caleb Cottle gave his team a 4-2 advantage on a double to center. Zach Brennan and Walters both scored on the play, allowing Morgantown to take a lead it wouldn’t surrender. A fifth run would be added before the end of the inning.
Furbee, coming off of vacation just last week, settled in after the first inning, crediting his teammates for giving him the run support needed to be successful on the mound.
“It was a good game all-around by these guys,” Furbee said, motioning to the players in the dugout. “They kept me in it, kept everyone in it. I had to find my way early on coming back from vacation and settle back in.”
“It gives me a whole lot of confidence that I can just throw strikes and I know we are always in the game with this team.”
The scoring continued for Morgantown in the bottom of the fourth. Walters hit another hard shot to the outfield that scored Aaron Forbes. He would score on the next pitch after a dropped fly ball came off the glove of the right fielder. Clarksburg committed four errors in the game, multiple of them resulting in runs for Post 2. The score would stand at 7-3 after four innings.
Post 13 added one run in the fifth to make the lead 7-4, but it wouldn’t last long. Zach Brennan cleared the bases on a three-run triple after he sent a ball over the head of the left fielder that rolled to the wall. Another run would give Post 2 a seven-run lead, 11-4.
After two runs in the bottom of the sixth made the lead 13-4, Forbes came to the plate with Cody Thomas on third, with a base hit ending the game. Forbes sent the ball to left and secured the win for Post 2 14-4.
Morgantown will continue on to play Bridgeport at 4 p.m. Wednesday at Dale Miller Field. Clarksburg will wait for the loser of Morgantown and Bridgeport at 7:00 p.m.
